History
The area now known as the District of Columbia was agreed upon at a dinner between James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, hosted by Thomas Jefferson.
Founded in 1790, Pierre Charles L’Enfant, a French-born architect and engineer, drew plans for Washington, D.C. in 1791. The cornerstone for the White House was laid in 1792, but was burned and gutted in 1814 along with the U.S. Capital, when the British forces attacked.
