Mahalo's WWE Backlash 2008 Predictions
- Stay tuned. Our predictions will be available once the full card had been announced.
World Heavyweight Championship
- The Undertaker vs. Edge
- Ken: It is unlikely that the title will exchange hands just one month after The Undertaker won it at WrestleMania XXIV. I'm also surprised that no special stipulation has been added to this rematch, but that is still a possibility at Friday's Smackdown. Look for the Undertaker to retain his title.
- Brad: I know Edge has been champion before, but even in previous reigns, he has lacked a certain X-factor with the fans. We boo him, but we don't really know why. As Ken said, there's little chance Taker will drop his belt a month after winning it, but even if he held it for a year going into this, I could never see someone with his presence losing to Edge and his lack of one. Taker will win.
WWE Championship Fatal Four Way
- John Cena vs. JBL vs. Randy Orton vs. Triple H
- Ken: Randy Orton has been on a roll, and I think that will continue at Backlash. A lot has been invested in Orton during his title run, and I just don't see him losing it in this match. He'll likely get the victory here, and eventually lose the belt to Triple H in a one-on-one match sometime in the coming months.
- Brad: Orton has slightly more heat than Edge ever had, and I think of all the other contenders here, he needs the belt more. Cena and Triple H are firmly established already, and don't need a title to get more recognition from the fans. And JBL, frankly, should've stayed retired (his return has been pointless thus far). The match itself has been haphazardly put together with no juicy buildup, so I'm gonna throw a dart randomly here and say Cena will win it.
- **Keep in mind, CM Punk is inconspicuously not on the Backlash card. He could cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase should a heel win the match. Of course, he could cash in on the World Heavyweight match instead, but seriously, he couldn't beat Taker any more than Edge could.
ECW Championship
- Kane vs. Chavo Guerrero
- Ken: Kane will defeat Chavo to retain his title in what has been a sub par feud. Kane is better suited to begin a program with someone else on the ECW or Smackdown roster, like Mark Henry.
- Brad: This match is a joke. All due respect to Chavo Guerrero, I couldn't buy the idea of him defeating Kane in any kind of match. Just the mere fact that Guerrero was the prestigious ECW Champion makes me laugh. Kane all the way.
Interbrand Match
- Shawn Michaels vs. Batista
- Ken: This should be an entertaining match with Michaels carrying most of the workload. Expect the crowd to be decidedly behind HBK, as they will likely put good heat on Batista (as they should). I predict that Batista will get himself disqualified, setting up a rematch between the two.
- Brad: The buildup for this match has made no sense whatsoever. It went from Batista being angry at HBK for retiring Flair (which, let's face it, should have been done 20 years ago), to Batista simply "not liking how Michaels got to where he is today." What?! I'm not a Shawn Michaels fan at all, but I think Batista will respect HBK a lot more during this match when he realizes that HBK is carrying the entire thing. For the sake of this "storyline," if the WWE wants to continue it, Batista should win here. But for the sake of my sanity, I hope Aldo Montoya interferes and takes them both out.
United States Championship
- MVP vs. Matt Hardy
- Ken: MVP has held the US Title for nearly a year. I think WWE wants a change of scenery, as well as a way to get people noticing Matt Hardy again. I think Hardy becomes the new US Champ, while MVP moves up the card and closer to contending for one of the two major championships.
- Brad: Though I'm not sure if MVP is worthy of a push to World Heavyweight status yet, I do believe it's high time Hardy got a title. This underrated feud has the most substantial buildup of any match on the card, so I hope it does not disappoint. I think Hardy will win it.
Other Matches
- Big Show vs. The Great Khali
- Ken: Khali can't wrestler and Big Show is too large to be able to carry this match on his own. Expect a very short match with Big Show getting the pinfall victory after knocking out Khali with a right-hand.
- Brad: Expect loads of "you can't wrestle!" chants during this bout... for both men. I don't think WWE fans have much patience for slow matches these days, so I think Big Show will end it quickly, making short news of Khali. I mean, the guy just lost to Mayweather last month. Let's give Big Show a break!
- 12-Diva Tag Team Match
- Ken: I could give a prediction, but it doesn't really matter in the least. This match will have no effect on anything.
- Brad: I'm gonna take a bathroom break here. Can you believe that not even five years ago, the women's division was actually GOOD in the WWE? You had Trish Stratus, Lita, even Molly Holly and Ivory--women who really wrestled. This match boils down to Mickie James versus Beth Phoenix, Victoria and Nattie Neidhart, since those are the only four who can actually wrestle in the match. I'd like to predict a winner here, but it's easier to predict the losers: the fans.
