Backlash is currently the follow-up pay-per-view to WrestleMania, often featuring rematches and continuing storylines from that event.

The first Backlash in 1999 had the same main event as WrestleMania XV, pitting Stone Cold Steve Austin against The Rock. Some fans argued that it was better than their WrestleMania encounter.¹ The two reunited as allies at the following Backlash in 2000, where Austin helped Rock defeat Triple H for the WWE Championship.

The 2002 Backlash saw the return of Hulk Hogan, who also defeated Triple H for the title. Hogan, who was nearly 50 years old at the time of his win, became one of the oldest WWE World Champions in history--second only to Vince McMahon, who won the belt at age 54.²
