Vanderbilt Siena Pre-Game Analysis

  • Vanderbilt earned a second straight selection into the NCAA Tournament, and third in the last five years, on the strength of a dominating performance on their home court. They won all 19 games played Memorial Gymnasium (probably because of the weird positioning of their benches), highlighted by their February 26 triumph over then top seeded Tennessee. However, the Commodores didn't find it easy like Sunday morning when they hit the road, splitting the 14 games they played away from home. Shan Foster delivers sweet sounds on the night shift, leading the club with 20.5 points per contest. When it comes to points from inside the paint, freshman A.J. Ogilvy from Australia is their brick house, with 17 points and nearly 7 boards per game. Siena is in the tournament for the first time since 2002, and fourth time in school history. As Stanford will attest to, the Saints can score in bunches, averaging over 76 points per game, with 25% of its scoring coming from three-point range. The versatile Edwin Ubiles led the Saints in scoring at 17.3 points per contest, while Kenny Hasbrouck and Alex Franklin combined to average 30 points per outing. Franklin was also a force on the boards, averaging 8 rebounds a game. The Saints scored over 80 points in a game 10 times this season, and dominated co-regular season champion Rider in the title game, winning by 21 points.
