Universal Music Group was formed in 1934 as the American branch of Decca Records, a label from Britain. UMG was the first music label to be tied to a film production company. As of 2004, UMG is no longer affiliated with Universal Studios. In 2006, UMG was purchased by Vivendi Studios. As of 2008, UMG is the largest music group in the United States.
