On May 21, 2008 Manchester United F.C. defeated Chelsea F.C. in the final match of the UEFA Cup. The win came after a 1-1 draw, with Manchester winning on penalties, 6-5.

The final penalty save was by goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar blocking Nicolas Anelka. This came after the captain of Chelsea, John Terry, had missed his own shot, hitting the post.

Didier Drogba from Chelsea was sent off during the game for slapping Nemanja Vidic.

Manchester's win on May 21, 2008, came 50 years after a plane crash killed eight members of the United team.

On February 6, 1958, a British European Airways charter plane carrying the team back from a European Cup match in Yugoslavia crashed during takeoff in Munich, Germany, killing 23 people on board.
