Guide Note: For several weeks, Democratic presi-
dential candidate Hillary Clinton featured the story of the late Trina Bachtel in her campaign stump speeches. The story speaks of an uninsured Bachtel who lost her baby and soon died herself after being denied care by an Ohio hospital because she could not pay a $100 fee. The story has since been denied by the O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, Ohio.
Bachtel did, in fact, pass away two weeks after her child was stillborn at the hospital. Hospital administrators claim that Bachtel was under the care of the River Rose Obstetrics and Gynecology practice, which is affiliated with the hospital, and that she was insured and was never refused treatment. A spokesperson for the hospital stated that the Clinton campaign never contacted the hospital to verify the Bachtel story, which Clinton said she'd been told by a sheriff's deputy in February.
