Thomas Beatie, a man from Oregon, was born female but underwent s sexual reassignment procedure in order to become a man. He kept his female organs and became pregnant in 2007 by artificial insemination.
The pregnancy was revealed in a April 8, 2008, article by Beatie, published in the gay, lesbian and transgender magazine, The Advocate.
Beatie gave birth to Susan Juliet Beatie on July 3, 2008.

Reassignment Procedures
Born Tracy LaGondino, Beatie reports that he fell in love with his wife, Nancy, while living in Hawaii. He underwent sex reassignment partially because same-sex marriages are not legal there.4
Beatie had testosterone therapy and chest reconstruction surgery, but retained his female genitalia.4
Pregnancy
After marriage, the couple wanted to start a family, but Nancy was unable to conceive. Consequently, although Beatie is legally recognized as a male, he decided to carry the baby.1
Beatie stated it took him two attempts at artificial insemination to become pregnant effectively and safely, and that nine doctors were involved in the pregnancy.1
Birth
Beatie reportedly went into labor early in the first week of July 2008, checking into a local Oregon hospital under an assumed name.5 After the July 3 birth, there were conflicting reports as to whether or not the delivery was done by Cesarean section. It has since been reported that Beatie had a natural birth.6
Beatie left the Oregon hospital on July 7, 2008. 7
Baby Photo
On July 24, 2008, a photo of Beatie and his newborn baby, Susan Juliette, appear with an interview by Beatie in People Magazine. The photo was reportedly sold to the magazine for $300,000.8
Book Planned
A biographical book written by Beatie is due out September 30, 2008, entitled Love Makes a Family: A Memoir of Hardship, Healing and an Extraordinary Pregnancy. The publisher is reported to be St. Martin's Press. 9
