Guide Note:

A television set is used to watch video broadcasts of programming. Commercially available to the general public since the 1930s, television replaced the radio as the main in-home form of entertainment for people around the world. Television sets are not only used to watch programming made available from terrestrial networks, otherwise known as over-the-air, and cable broadcasting outlets, but also are used to watch pre-recorded content through video tape recording playback machines and digital video disc players.

Television sets were a black-and-white proposition until the 1970s when color sets became all the rage. Back then, it was only the affluent who could afford more than one television set in a household. Today, television sets are merely part of a home entertainment system which includes, in many cases, state-of-the-art video and audio equipment.
