On April 23, 2008, an estimated 5.8 earthquake struck off the east coast of the island nation of Taiwan. Twelve hours earlier, an estimate 4.7 earthquake shook the ocean floor 14 miles southeast of the Taiwanese city of Yilan. No immediate reports of damage or casualties from the recent quake are yet available. In 1999, a massive 7.6 earthquake killed approximately 2,400 people in central Taiwan.
