Story
Super Mario Land is unique from other games in the series because it was developed by Gunpei Yokoi and not Shigeru Miyamoto. The game is not set in Mushroom Kingdom, but rather in the Kingdom of Sarasaland, and the damsel in distress Mario must rescue is not Princess Peach, but Princess Daisy. The antagonist of the story is Tatanga rather than Bowser, the King Koopa.2.
Gameplay
The primary enemies are also different from most other Mario games. The shelled enemies, called Koopas in other games are modified, so that their shells explode a few seconds after Mario jumps on an enemy. Mario must pilot both a submarine and an airplane in certain levels. Fire flowers appear to be the same as in other Mario games, but they give Mario the power to fire small balls rather than fireballs, which function somewhat differently.3
