Super Bowl XXXII

Guide Note:

The Denver Broncos defeated the Green Bay Packers 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII]. After 13 straight years of dominance, this Super Bowl saw an NFC team lose for the first time since the Los Angeles Raiders victory in Super Bowl XVIII. And for the Broncos, the victory came after suffering four previous Super Bowl defeats in their team history. The Broncos entered the game as a double-digit underdog to the defending Super Bowl champion Packers. The victory made Denver only the second wild card team to win a Super Bowl, joining the 1980 Oakland Raiders. The 1969 Kansas City Chiefs also won a Super Bowl IV without winning a division title, but were not considered a 'wild card' team officially. Running back Terrell Davis rushed for 157 yards and scored 3 rushing touchdowns. He was named the game's Most Valuable Player award, despite missing several plays while suffering from a severe case of migraine headaches. The broadcast would be the last for NBC for eight seasons.

This One's For John

Unlike his other three previous trips to the Super Bowl, Denver quarterback John Elway was not the main focus of his team, but rather one of many equally talented players. At the age of 37, Elway finally achieved a victory he had long chased after. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen took the Lombardi Memorial Trophy from NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue in the post-game ceremony, held it in the air and handed to Elway, simply saying into the microphone, "This One's for John."
