The show made its debut on June 6, 1998 to critic and fan favor. It quickly became the most popular series of the year and has been given a cult like status due to the devotion of its followers. The season finale boasted higher numbers than any other finale in the history of television.

The leading woman "Carrie Bradshaw" was played by Sarah Jessica Parker, she was also the narrator of each show. Her three best friend were Kristin Davis as "Charlotte York", Cynthia Nixon as "Miranda Hobbes", and Kim Cattrall as "Samantha Jones." The women's characters have been called "shallow, superficial, and self-absorbed" but many that claim to be offended by their brutal "truth" of their sexuality and fantasies still watched the show, if only to see what the women had to say next.
