On August 29, 2008, Sarah Louise Heath married her high school sweetheart Todd Palin. Due to a bad fishing season and lack of money, the couple eloped and were married by a Justice of the Peace at the courthouse in Palmer, Alaska. Two residents from a local nursing home served as witnesses. Republican presidential candidate John McCain announced on August 29, 2008, Sarah Palin's 20th wedding anniversary, that he had chosen her to be his running mate in the Election 2008 campaign.
