Sam & Dave were an effusive soul duo with two gold singles: 1966's "Hold On! I'm a Comin'" and 1967's "Soul Man ". Part of the classic roster of the Stax Records label, the pair remain icons of '60s soul. Sam Moore and Dave Prater each had deep roots in the southern gospel tradition, of which their call-and-response vocal style is seen as a reflection. After they split in 1981, Moore continued to tour as "Sam and Dave," with a different Sam, Sam Daniels—leading Prater to attempt legal action. Prater died in a car accident in 1988. Moore has continued to record as a solo act, and as a backup singer for other artists, including Bruce Springsteen.

Soul Man

The track "Soul Man" went on to have a sort of career of its own. It was a key song in the 1979 film The Blues Brothers and the title (and theme) of the controversial 1986 comedy "Soul Man". The song also earned Sam and Dave an induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
