Nicole Simpson's ex-husband, former football player O.J. Simpson, was accused of the crime, but was acquitted after a prolonged trial. O.J. Simpson was, however, found financially liable for the murders in a 1997 civil trial, which resulted in Simpson owing Goldman's family $33.5 million in damages. In August of 2007, the Goldman family were awarded the rights to O.J. Simpson's book, If I Did It, which was published the following month and became an immediate bestseller.
