Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness is the second title in the children's role playing Mystery Dungeons series for the Nintendo DS in which players explore a land untouched by humans as an actual Pokémon. A television special based on the game aired on the Cartoon Network prior to the game's release on April 20, 2008.

Prior to the start of gameplay, players take a test to determine which of the 16 Pokémon best represents their personality. The journey begins when they are discovered by an adventuring Pokemon in the "Wigglytuff Guild", washed up on a sandy beach, with no recollection of how they got there.

Explore randomly generated dungeons to overcome an evil Pokémon whose goal is to plunge the world into eternal darkness. Because they are randomly generated, each dungeon contains new floor plans, treasures, stair locations, and enemies. Unless you are rescued by a friend, you will lose your money and some items with each dungeon defeat. Defeats may also get players returned to the guild or a specific save point. The mission for each dungeon must be completed prior to exiting.
