To the layman, the preparation of an oyster stew may sound like the preparation of a soup. A stew, however, typically uses bigger pieces, a thicker liquid, and is eaten as a main course. Common ingredients found in oyster stew include celery, oysters, evaporated milk or cream, peppers, onions, a variety of vegetables and chicken bouillon.

According to urban legend, oysters are considered an aphrodisiac. Unlike most legends, however, there is some evidence to support these beliefs. Oysters are rich in zinc which is required to build testosterone. There is also research to suggest that amino acids that increase sex hormones are found in oysters.¹ In order to get the most out of the dish, they should be eaten raw, as cooking reduces the effectiveness of amino acids.
