Fencing is one of four sports that has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the founding of the modern Olympics in 1896. Three types of swords are used: foils, épées and sabres.1
At the 2008 Summer Olympics, the fencing events were held from August 9 to August 17, 2008, at the National Convention Center on the Olympic Green.2 Five men's medal sets and five women's medal sets were awarded.3 Italy led all nations and took home seven medals. The United States won six medals, France won four and Germany and China each won two.4

History
Men's fencing was one of nine sports featured at the first Summer Olympic Games in 1896. Women's foil events were added to the program in 1924. Women's épée followed in 1996 and women's sabre was introduced in 2004.6
