Odin Sphere

Odin Sphere is an action RPG that features five heroines seeking to discover the truth behind a prophecy. The game takes place in a 2D-environment, and has been widely acclaimed for its artwork.

Story

The game takes place in the fantasy world of Erion. Several kingdoms are in conflict and wish to gain control of the magical artifact known as the Crystallization Cauldron. However, there has been a prophecy that states control over the object will lead to the destruction of the world. You start the game of as a valkyrie who also happens to be the daughter of a king. She opens up a five different books that follow the life of five different heroes. After the end of the game, you open up the five different heroes and are able to experience a different side of the story.

Gameplay

Gameplay for each character takes place across a number of locations and the adventures are divided into main chapters. These stages are the "sphere": a circular side scrolling area that repeats upon itself. There are four different kinds of stages: two of them being battle stage and blue stage. Battles with monsters increase your experience points, necessary for leveling up as well as items. You can increase the amount of items depending on how quickly you defeat the enemies in the area. All battles, beside boss battles, are timed and graded. The grade refers to how quickly you won and your performance. A score of S is the best and D is the worst. Combat is done in real-time and are controlled by the square button and D pad. Attacks can be strung together for combos as well as aerial combos. Defeating enemies releases magic energy that fills your magic gauge. When it's full you can use a variety of offensive and defensive spells. Besides combat, another important system is the item system. You can synthesize items together and create meals. Food has a variety of uses as it will heal. Other types of food will increase your max HP or your XP. There are five playable characters and three difficulty settings and over 40 hours of gameplay.
