CNET was impressed with the fantastic color rendering, wide array of features and fast performance. PopPhoto.com saw the same quality and features as the Nikon D200, but for a fraction for a fraction of the price in the D80. This model was the PC Magazine Editor's Choice for a high end digital SLR, commenting that is is easy to use and does not disappoint.

There have been few complaints about the D80, with CNET only mentioning a slight flash delay and that the full RAW editor is sold separately. Some Amazon users complained of overexposure problems, but calling the unit 99% perfect.
