Personal Life

Sarkozy married his first wife, Marie-Dominique Culioli, in 1982 but their marriage ended in divorce in 1996. In October of that same year, Sarkozy married Cecilia Ciganer-Albeniz. They divorced in 2007. In 2008, he married singer Carla Bruni. His marriage to Culioli produced two children, while his marriage to Ciganer-Albeniz produced one.

Political Background

From 1983, until 2002, Sarkozy was Mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine. In 1993, he became Minister of the Budget, which lasted until March 10, 1995. On March 31, 2004, he became Minister of State of Economy, Finance and Industry. Prior to be electing President, Sarkozy was the Minister of the Intertior, from May 31, 2005, until March 26, 2007.

Controversies

While in office, Sarkozy has faced criticism for his views and remarks that he made during a speech, along with comments made during interviews, and in a book he wrote called The Republic, Religions, and Hope. In addition, he did not support the U.S.'s invasion of Iraq, even though his foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, did.

War in Afghanistan

The Taliban ambushed French troops in the district of Sarobi, on August 18-19, 2008. Ten soldiers were killed and twenty-one were wounded. The French soldiers were attacked by approximately 100 insurgents east of Kabul. Three U.S. soldiers were wounded in a separate attack on Camp Salerno.¹
