Brief History

The area around Nashville was formerly known as "French Lick" for the numerous French fur trading outposts situated there in the 18th century. Nashville became an important trading center and terminating point for the Natchez Trace.⁴ In 1843, the city of Nashville became the capital of Tennessee.³ In December 1864, the city was the site of a decisive battle in the U.S. Civil War.⁵

Industry

In the 20th century, a thriving country music industry emerged in Nashville, so that today the city is known as both Music City USA and the "Country Music Capital of the World."²
