The playoffs consist of 4 rounds: wild card weekend, division round, conference championships, and the Super Bowl
From 1933-1966, there were only playoff games when a tie for a division title happened (9 times total)
From 1967-69, there were 4 divisions in the NFL, so they held 2 rounds of playoffs to determine league champion and Super Bowl representative
The AFL held 2 divisional championship games: in 1963 and 1968. In 1969, they added the 2nd place team from each of their 2 divisions for a two round playoff.
Since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, there have been playoffs after every season
