Guide Note

Following each football season, the NFC Championship Game is held to determine which one of the 16 teams in the National Football Conference of the NFL will appear in the Super Bowl. The winner also is awarded the George Halas Trophy.

2008 NFC game

In the 2008 version of the contest, the New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers 23-20 in overtime to advance to Super Bowl XLII.

History

The game began in 1970 following the merger of the NFL with the American Football League. The first game, held in early 1971, featured the Dallas Cowboys defeating the San Francisco 49ers 17 to 10.
