Prophet
Muhammad was a middle-aged merchant when he retreated to a cave to meditate. While there, he experienced a vision. He maintained that he was visited by the angel Gabriel and given revelations from Allah. These revelations formed the basis of Islam, with Muhammad functioning as a prophet.
Genealogy
Muslims believe that Muhammad was descended from Abraham through his first son, Ishmael. Jews and Christians consider themselves linked to Abraham through his second son, Isaac.6 Consequently, all three of the world's largest monotheistic religions claim the same ancestor.7
