Miracle at St. Anna Reviews
Spike Lee's Miracle at St. Anna received mostly negative reviews upon its release. The film earned a 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, being labeled as a "well-intentioned" but "disjointed" movie.1 James Rocchi of Cinematical called the film a "sprawling, messy epic of war," but praised the "superb" lead actors playing the four soldiers.2
Roger Ebert gave Miracle three out of four stars, but pointed out several scenes in his review that could have been shortened. Still, Ebert wrote that even though the film may have contained "too much," it was "better than too little."3
Emanuel Levy thought Miracle was a "major disappointment" because of its "shapeless" plot. Levy also claimed Lee was "trying to do too much" with the movie, resulting in a lack of "unifying perspective to integrate them into a more coherent picture."4
Varietys Todd McCarthy also criticized the "clunky, poorly constructed" plot, and found the characters one-dimensional.5
