History
The Blue Raiders football team was organized in 1911. The team played as an independent for many years, then joined the NCAA in 1954.1 They played in their first bowl game in 1956, falling to Sam Houston State in the Refrigerator Bowl. Middle Tennessee played in the Tangerine Bowl in 1960 and 1961, winning one and losing one. Their final bowl appearance as part of the Ohio Valley Conference came in 1964, defeating Muskingum 20 to zero.2
In 1999, the Blue Raiders were promoted to Division I-A in the NCAA. They played one season as an independent, then joined the Sun Belt Conference.1 They appeared in their first major bowl game in 2006, falling to Central Michigan in the Motor City Bowl.2
