Michigan State Temple Pre-Game Analysis
- The season started out very promising for Michigan State, as the Spartans won 19 of their first 21 contests. But the Spartans have been very inconsistent since the calendar changed from January to February, as they went only 5-5 in their last 10 regular season contests. Further exacerbating their fans has been their inability to protect the ball, committing nearly 14 turnovers per game on average this season. Their inconsistency seems to mirror their ability to get Drew Neitzel, arguably the best player in the Big Ten, consistent and clean looks at the basket. When he's on, the Spartans can play with anyone in the country. When he's not, the Spartans can look lost, as they did in scoring just 36 points in a loss at Iowa. Still, head coach Tom Izzo does have a great track record in the tournament. He's won 73% of the games he's coached in the "Big Dance", ranking him 3rd among active coaches with at least 10 or more tournament games coached; he's guided the Spartans to 11 consecutive tournament appearances; he's been to the Final Four in four of those appearances, and won the 2000 national championship. The Temple Owls have a rich tradition of tournament appearances, but most of those came during the tenure of legendary coach John Cheney. This is the first appearance for the Owls under new coach Fran Dunphy, and let's just say that these are not your father's Temple Owls. The Cheney teams were known primarily for defense - these Owls are explosive and register points on the scoreboard at a rapid pace. Dionte Christmas, who for some reason is wearing uniform number 22 (not 25), led the Owls in scoring averaging 20 points per contest, accounting for 40% of the three-point field goals the team made this season. Christmas also adhered to the adage that, "it's better to give than receive" by dishing out 2.5 assists per game. Teammate Mark Tyndale also averaged double figures in points (15.9 ppg) and led the club in assists. Temple finishes in second place behind Xavier in the regular season conference standings, and actually defeated Xavier in their only regular season meeting by 19 points. The Owls, who received an automatic bid by winning the Atlantic 10 Tournament title, scored 80 or more points in a game 10 times this season, and they won nine of those contests.
