Merlot

Merlot is both a grape and a popular red wine produced from it. Though it originated in Italy in the 18th century, it remains the most popular in the United States and Chile. A wine with a medium body, is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz.

Merlot Production

France, Italy and California are the top three producers of Merlot wines and grapes. Though often thought of as a lesser red wine, several rare and prized red wines are distilled primarily from the Merlot grape, including Chateau Petrus, a French Bordeaux wine.

The grape vines grow best in cold soil. If left to age, the wine will have a stronger body and fruity taste. If picked early, the wine will maintain its natural acidity.
