Melamine
Melamine is a synthetic chemical used in industry for a variety of purposes. Large quantities of melamine have been found in foods produced in China, including candies, baby formula and dog food.1 2 It is thought that melamine was added to these foods to make it seem like they had more protein in them than they actually did.3 In its unprocessed form, melamine is a colorless or white crystalline powder.
