Matthew Mitcham
Australian diver Matthew Mitcham was selected to compete in the three meter springboard and 10 meter platform diving events at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.1 In 2008, Mitcham revealed to The Sydney Morning Herald that he was gay, making him one of the first openly gay Australian athletes.2

Diving Career
Mitcham was a gymnast as a child and began diving in 1999. In 2001, he won the Diving National Age three meter and platform events and was selected as diver of the year. He competed at the 2004 FINA World Junior Diving Championships, where he took home silver medals in the one meter, three meter synchronized and 10 meter events. Mitcham took some time away from diving in 2006 and 2007, but returned to compete in the 2008 FINA Diving Grand Prix in 2008, where he won the 10 meter event.
