Martin Ramirez
Martin Ramirez was a Mexican artist who spent 30 years of his life in psychiatric hospitals due to mental illness. Ramirez migrated from Mexico to the United States around 1915 and was diagnosed as a catatonic schizophrenic.
Ramirez created hundreds of drawings while confined in northern California's DeWitt State Hospital from 1948 to 1963.
Many of the drawings Ramirez created were done with pencils and crayons on paper. His subjects included men riding horses, trains traveling in and out of tunnels and Madonnas.12
