Mario Kart Wii Unlockable Karts
Mario Kart Wii features 18 different karts available for play. Each weight class (Light, Medium, Heavy) has six karts in their category. Initially, players can select a Standard Kart or one designer kart. By passing different courses and time trials, more karts are unlocked. The Kart ratings is a spin-off of a similar system used in Mario Kart DS. Karts are rated based on acceleration, top speed, handling, item chances and turbos. Karts have a different play style than the new motorcycles in the game. Cycles can only produce blue turbos (short boosts), as opposed to karts, which can produce blue turbos and red turbos (longer boosts). Karts cannot do wheelies, which cycles can do. In the beginning, players can only use karts in 100cc and 150cc modes. When a player passes the 50cc cups, players can then use karts on that mode by pressing "Start" on the mode selection screen. Players can also use karts in Mirror Mode, but they must pass 150cc first.
