Guide Note

The dramatic two hour finale of Lost, the ABC television drama, took place on May 29, 2008 with episodes titled "There's No Place Like Home" part two and part three.

The title awarded the viewer a glimpse of what to expect in the finale and referenced Dorothy's words in The Wizard of Oz as she voiced her desire to return home from a place far away.

When it appeareds that some survivors would be able to leave the island, John Locke tried to convince Jack to stay saying, "You know that you're here for a reason. If you leave this place, that knowledge is going to eat you alive from the inside out, until you decide to come back."

Inside the Orchid Station Ben stabed Keamy in the throat, finishing off the job that Sayid began in the jungle. Because the heart rate monitor attached to his arm was silently connected to a dynamite stash on the freighter, as soon as hedied the freighter blew up with Jin and Michael still on it. Shortly before that occurred, Michael was visited by Christian Shepard who told him that "he could go" and freed him from the island's contract, which would not allow Michael to die.

Knowing an eminent attack was upon the island, Ben had previously hesitated to move it. Ben revealed the reason behind his hesitation when he told Locke that whoever moves the island will be forbidden, as punishment, from ever returning. Ben blew up the Dharma capacitor with metal items and retreated below the surface to move a frozen wheel which transported the island to an unknown location.

Locke joined "the others" and was welcomed as their leader.

The Oceanic six were rescued, after the helicopter crash, while they floated on an emergency raft. Desmond's long-lost-love Penny was their rescuer. They were released many miles away, on the lifeboat, near an inhabited island, to protect their island comrades and their life of lies.

Back in the United States the Oceanic Six each lived a miserable existence and were visited by an acquaintance named Jeremy Bentham. Bentham implored them to return to the island and was rebuffed by them all. Jack was haunted by Bentham's words "very bad things” happened on the island after you left and it's all your fault."

Upon Bentham's death by apparent suicide, Jack paid his respects at the funeral home and was confronted by Ben who knew Jack was tormented by the need to get back to the island. Ben told Jack, "The island won't let you come alone. All of you have to go back."

The final resolution of the mystery of Lost happened when John Locke was revealed to be the mysterious Jeremy Bentham.
