Kool & the Gang

Kool & the Gang is a popular R&B; and funk band whose 1973 album Wild and Peaceful produced the chart-topping singles "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging".

The band was founded in 1964 when Robert Bell (AKA "Kool") formed an instrumental band called the Jazziacs. The band changed its name to Kool & the Gang when they signed with De-Lite Records in 1969. Their sound shifted from jazz to R&B; and funk with the 1973 release of Wild and Peaceful. Critics see their next two albums Light of the Worlds (1974) and Spirit of the Boogie (1975) as their greatest achievements. They abandoned their funk sound and switched to disco in the late 70s and early 80s, releasing their Number 1 hit "Celebration" in 1980.

Since the early 90s, the band's songs have been sampled by numerous hip-hop artists including De La Soul, N.W.A. and Boogie Down Productions. The tune "Jungle Boogie" was included on the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's 1994 film Pulp Fiction.
