Kodiak Plane Crash
On January 5, 2008 a privately-chartered plane carrying 10 passengers crashed into water soon after it took off from a small landing strip near Kodiak, Alaska. It traveled between 50 and 100 yards from the strip before it crashed. The fuselage became submerged, trapping many of the passengers.

Fishing Trip
All nine passengers were members of the Russian Orthodox Church. They were visiting Kodiak Island for a group fishing trip, and were heading home to Homer, Alaska in time to celebrate Eastern Orthodox Christmas on January 7.2
