Guide Note

Karolos Papoulias is the President of Greece. He was elected to office in 2005. Before his presidency he held a number of offices including Minister Minister of Foreign Affairs twice, from 1985-1989 and 1993-1996. Papoulias came to prominence as a resistance member, fighting against Nazi occupation of Greece during World War II. After the war, he became a founding member of the Socialist Democratic Union, a group that worked to oppose the military junta that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974. As foreign minister he was instrumental in negotiations related to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and has been an advocate for normalizing relations with Arab nations. Papoulias has generally worked for greater cooperation between nations and also for mutual disarmament.
