FINAL
- There were moments when it looked like UNLV might have something on Kansas, but as the second half wore on, the Runnin' Rebels were worn down by a nearly superhuman Kansas effort on both offense and defense. Chalmers led the Jayhawks with 17 points, but Robinson, Rush and Collins were all hot at one point in the game, and every Jayhawk who took the floor played suffocating defense that resulted in UNLV converting just 12 times from the floor. Kansas fans are licking their chops now, as their team awaits the winner of 12-seed Villanova and 13-seed Siena in the Sweet 16.
SECOND HALF
- 0:00: Coach Self asks that his players don't take another shot...classy.
- 0:47: Yup, Chalmers hits another three.
- 1:30: TIMEOUT: Chalmers has only one more point than KU's second-highest scorer, but he's probably the Player of the Game for the Jayhawks.
- Dean: Balance often contributes to championships, and that was the name of the game for Kansas tonight. The highest five scorers for KU so far have scored 13, 12, 12, 10, and 9.
- 2:14: TIMEOUT: A loss is inevitable, but UNLV has nothing to be ashamed of tonight as they just ran into an unstoppable Jayhawks team that lived up to their billing and then some.
- 2:38: Terry gets a three and has 12 points for the Rebels.
- 2:55: Now KU can do no wrong, Rush sinks a three.
- 3:45: Arthur makes a beautiful turnaround jumper, he has 9 for the Jayhawks.
- 4:30: Collins gets a nice layup, KU with its biggest lead of the night.
- 5:09: TIMEOUT: 3-14 shooting in the 2nd half for the Rebels is the story...
- Dean: Poor shooting is ultimately what killed UNLV today, they're at 27% now, much of which is due to KU's unbelievable defense.
- 6:49: Rougeau fouled out for UNLV.
- 7:04: Chalmers missed a dunk but he was fouled. He made one of his free throws.
- Dean: The announcer mentioned that UNLV has just 11 field goals thus far. Ouch.
- 7:33: TIMEOUT: Adams just made a nice move of his own to get a bucket and he'll go to the line. Kansas is just too tough, though. The Rebels are doing everything they can and there's no signs of quit in them, but KU is running on all cylinders now on both offense and defense.
- 7:40: Collins is showing why KU's so tough to gain ground on at this point in a game. He made a beautiful move to the hoop to give Kansas their biggest lead.
- 8:20: Robinson is doing whatever he wants as he drives inside for a layup.
- Dean: UNLV is getting KU to foul but they're starting to get cold from the foul line.
- 9:00: KU has its biggest lead after Collins drives down the lane and scores.
- Dean: UNLV is going to have to have someone start to score, if they don't get a strong run here soon it's over.
- 9:33: Darger fouls out, the Rebels are going to miss the 3-point threat he poses to KU.
- 10:00: Robinson gets his first 3 for KU.
- 10:16: UNLV's Darger picks up his fourth foul, he joins Shaw with 4.
- 10:55: Collins gets the jump shot to go down for KU.
- Dean: Shaw gets his 4th foul now, he'll sit for UNLV.
- 11:58: TIMEOUT: Shaw for UNLV just got his third foul to match his 3 points for the game.
- 12:20: UNLV is playing great D as well, and are drawing fouls out of KU...Adams sinks two from the line for the Rebels to cut the KU lead to 5.
- Dean: It should be said that Kansas has answered UNLV's challenge on the defensive end and stepped up their effort to equal that of the Rebels.
- 13:46: Collins drives and scores for KU, it's his first bucket.
- 13:58: TIMEOUT: Good news for KU, they took away the foul from Kaun and gave it to Rush, it's just his second.
- 14:28: TIMEOUT: KU's Kaun just got his 3rd foul as he covered Wink Adams, who leads all players with 11 points and two foul shots coming. It's a 9-point game, but UNLV seems to be hanging in.
- 15:50: Kaun gets a layup, he's got just 4, though, so far for the Jayhawks.
- 16:31: Darger stops the bleeding with a three for the Rebs.
- 16:53: Robinson puts KU up by 10, their biggest lead.
- Dean: Some sloppy play on both sides, UNLV has 7 turnovers so far.
- 19:10: After UNLV answers with a deuce, Rush nails a three for KU. Could get out of hand pretty quickly here if the Rebels aren't careful.
- 19:36: Slammed home by Arthur for KU.
- Dean: Let's see if UNLV can keep the pressure on; doesn't seem too realistic that they can hold off KU forever, so they better have a hot streak or two in 'em as well.
HALFTIME
- Kansas has displayed some of the magic that made them a top seed in this one, but UNLV isn't intimidated and has done a pretty outstanding job of keeping the sharp-shooting Jayhawks from going on the kind of run that might suck the soul out of an underdog like the Rebs. KU is shooting well from the floor (53%), but haven't been able to capitalize on many threes, which is usually a staple of their game. If UNLV can keep the pressure on and keep the Jayhawks from getting on any more hot streaks, they may just have a shot.
FIRST HALF
- 0:00: KU tried a long three which was not close...it's just a 5-point game at the half.
- 0:46: Chalmers gets another three, he's probably stepped up as much as anyone in the first half for Kansas.
- 0:51: Bailey to Adams for a great score for UNLV, they needed that to keep KU from starting a run.
- 1:23: TIMEOUT: Kansas needed that three from Chalmers, it looked like UNLV was really taking them out of their game (which usually relies on the 3 quite a bit).
- 1:31: KU finally gets a 3 from Chalmers.
- Dean: Rebels doing a great job of keeping KU from getting into a rhythm, and the Jayhawks have yet to hit a 3. UNLV is also 9 of 10 from the charity stripe.
- 3:22: Darger sinks a nice 3 to get the lead down to 2 for UNLV.
- 3:48: TIMEOUT: UNLV looks like they're getting a little worn down by the Jayhawks' speed and quickness. To only be down by 5 after shooting just 28% from the floor is a minor victory in this first half. Meanwhile KU's shooting an impressive 57%.
- 4:15: Rush completes a 7-0 run for KU. UNLV is struggling to get something going.
- 4:48: Chalmers got a little too aggressive there, he charged on his way to the hoop, his first foul.
- 5:25: Chalmers is FAST for KU, he drives and scores to put the Jayhawks up by 3.
- 6:13: KU's Robinson drives to the hoop and gets the deuce and a foul. Makes the free throw to go up by 1.
- 6:52: Aldrich gets one to get the scoring started again for KU.
- Dean: No 3's for KU yet, Chalmers just missed again.
- 7:48: TIMEOUT: Rougeau of UNLV is about to shoot two from the line to try to go ahead, he got fouled by Aldrich. Some gritty play by the Rebels...they just have to hope they can keep the Jayhawks from getting hot.
- 8:22: Adams looks like he and Terry want to try to will a win for UNLV; he makes 2 free throws to tie it again.
- 8:52: It's Rush for KU, he gets a jumper to regain the lead.
- 9:05: Adams again to tie it for the Rebs.
- 10:00: UNLV's Wink Adams gets his first basket, a tip-in of his own miss.
- 11:12: Darger of UNLV gets his first bucket, he'll need to step up today.
- 11:42: TIMEOUT: Kaun of KU just got his 2nd foul after that huge slam. Kansas has an enormous height advantage over UNLV, which is going to be one of many challenges for the Rebels today.
- 12:10: Oof...Collins to Kaun for a monster alley-oop.
- 12:30: Terry has come to play for the Rebs, he drives to the basket and is fouled by the much taller (than anyone on UNLV) Kaun
- 13:02: It's Arthur again for KU, he lays it up.
- 13:28: Terry hits his second three, a deep one. He has all 6 points for UNLV.
- 14:35: Arthur stole it and slammed it for KU.
- 15:13: TIMEOUT: UNLV can't rely on fouling Kansas to stop their scoring. The Rebels already have 5 team fouls.
- 15:48: Chalmers joins the party with a huge dunk for the Jayhawks. Didn't take long for them to start to dominate.
- 16:10: Jackson hits his second in a row for Kansas.
- Dean: UNLV is known for its defense, Kansas for its three-point shooting. Something's got to give there, as the announcers tell us. UNLV is playing aggressive as they're known to do, which is great except they're fouling.
- 17:54: UNLV fouls, Kansas has had it 4 times now without points.
- 19:20: Terry hits a three for the Rebels to get things started.
- Kansas wins the tip!
