Gordon-Levitt began acting as a 6-year old in a children's musical group, and broke into film in the 1992 Robert Redford film A River Runs Through It. Gordon-Levitt starred in the television series 3rd Rock from the Sun from 1996-2001, before taking a hiatus from acting to attend Columbia University, where he studied French but did not graduate. He is noted for his smooth transition from child star to adult actor. After his time as a student at Columbia, Gordon-Levitt tackled some heavy dramatic material. In Mysterious Skin he played a teenage hustler, and in Brick he played a high school loner who investigates the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend by diving into to dark world of drugs and gangs. He is rumored to be involved in the new Akira.
