The John F. Kennedy International Airport is newest of the airports in the New York area. In 2007, they served almost 48,000,000 passengers. It is the second largest gateway for international freight in the United States. It is owned by New York City and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

As of May 2008 the JFK Airport serves 86 current airlines (two seasonal). The carriers that serve the most passengers out of the airport are JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, British Airways and United Airlines.

History

Construction for JFK Airport started in 1942 with major expansions in 1957, 1962 and 1998. The first flight was July 1, 1948. The airport was originally named the New York International Airport. One month after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, the name was changed to John F. Kennedy International Airport.
