Roberts came to the WWF in 1986 and began bringing a python named Damien with him to the ring, earning him the name Jake "The Snake". One of Roberts' most memorable moments came at WrestleMania III when he was accompanied to the ring by Alice Cooper for his match againts the Honky Tonk Man. Other notable feuds for Roberts included Rick Rude, Andre the Giant, and The Undertaker.

Outside of wrestling, Roberts has struggled with multiple addictions, including drugs and alcohol. He was one of the subjects of the film Beyond the Mat, which documented some of Robert's problems. In December 2007, Roberts entered substance abuse rehabilitation after an extended offer was made by WWE to any former wrestler in need of help.
