Guide Note

The International Court of Justice, also called the World Court or ICJ, is the main judicial organ of the United Nations (UN). Based in The Hague, Netherlands, the International Court of Justice was established by the UN in 1945 to deal with legal disputes submitted by member nations and to give legal advice to other international organizations.

Overseen by the United Nations

The 15 judges who make up the International Court of Justice are elected by voting in both the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council. In cases where a country does not comply with one of the ICJ's rulings, the Security Council takes responsibility for enforcing the consequences.²
