- 1948: Established
- 1950-1959: CIA and ISI worked in tandem during the Nixon in assisting the Khalistan movement in Punjab.
- 1969: Ayub Khan gives the responsibility of collecting of internal political intelligence to the ISI.
- 1970: ISI loses its importance during the regime of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, who is critical of the role the ISI played during the 1970 general elections, which triggers the events partitioning of Pakistan and emergence of Bangladesh.
- 1977-1979: The ISI becomes responsible for collecting intelligence from the Sindh, Shia, and the Pakistan Peoples Party
