Introduction
- If you're in the market for a new computer, one of the big decisions you'll need to make is the choice between Mac and PC. Back in the day, if you chose Mac, you'd limit yourself to communicating electronically with other Mac owners. Now, however, the communication barrier between Mac and PC has been breached, making Apple computers a great choice for consumers. Learn how to bring home the right Mac for you.
Step 1: Why Mac?

- One must tread carefully as one enters the realm of the Mac vs. PC controversy. Proponents of both systems can deliver passionate, convincing arguments for why one is better than the other. However, Popular Mechanics chose Mac over PC for both laptops and desktops. They found the Macs they tested to be faster and surprisingly cost-effective. In addition, Mac lovers commonly claim the following advantages for Apple computers:
- Fewer viruses and spyware: There simply aren't as many viruses out there targeting Macs as there are targeting PCs.
- Better software package: It used to be that people chose PCs over Macs because it was hard to find supported software for Apple computers. However, that's no longer the case, and your new Mac comes complete with some terrific software.
- In-store support: You can make a reservation at the Genius Bar at your local Apple store in advance and simply show up on time for assistance from a real person.
- Wireless connectivity: Setting up a wireless network is super easy.
Step 2: Decide On a Budget
- It's important to decide on a budget for a computer before you begin shopping. If you don't, you're likely to spend more than you can really afford. That said, you also need to be reasonable about how much you're willing to spend. You're not likely to get the computer you need for $1. Talk to friends who know about computers or do some preliminary research online when trying to determine what to expect.

- Once you've decided how much you can afford to spend on a new Mac, it's time to decide what features your new computer should have.
- Laptop or desktop?
- A desktop is a good choice if you know you'll use it in only one place or you need lots of RAM. If you decide on a desktop, Apple offers two formats—a traditional box and monitor setup, or a computer with an integrated monitor. The latter takes up less space on your desk; however, if for some reason you eventually need a new monitor, you'll need to get a new computer.
- Get a laptop if there's any chance you'll need to move it or if you simply don't need the extra power provided by a desktop. If you decide on a laptop, how important is portability? Some notebooks are heavier than others, which makes a difference if you plan on carrying it around on your shoulder constantly. If you want something super light, the MacBook Air may fit your needs. However, if you just want a laptop that you can use in different locations around the house during the day, weight isn't as important.
- How big should your monitor be? You can always attach a separate monitor to your laptop if you only need the larger screen size when at your desk. However, if your screen acreage needs to travel with you, you should get a laptop that has a larger built-in monitor.
- How fast does your computer need to be? Both the computer's processor and RAM will affect the computer's speed. If you're only running simple web browsers and word processing applications, this shouldn't be an issue. However, if you run more demanding programs, or are an uber-multi-tasker, you should be sure to get a fast processor and a large amount of RAM.
- How much memory will you need? If you only save text files on your computer, you shouldn't have any worries. However, if you plan to create multimedia projects on your Mac, spend some money to get more storage.
- What kind of graphics capabilities do you want? If you don't use programs that require a high-end graphics card, a more cost-effective computer with a basic graphics card may be the choice for you. However, if you intend to play games with detailed graphics or edit videos on your computer, you'll need a good graphics card.
- What kind of optical drive do you need? Some notebooks don't have a CD or DVD drive at all, others can write CDs but not DVDs, while still others can save information on both types of disks. If you plan on using your new Mac to make home DVDs, make sure to get the latter.
Step 4: Read Reviews

- Once you've found a computer that seems to meet your needs, check out online reviews of the product. Don't take everything the company says about its own products at face value. Read what consumers like you have to say about their experiences.
Step 5: Get Hands-On
- Is it ever a good idea to make a major purchase without trying the product out first? Go to an Apple store to try out the computer you're considering. Ask an employee to show you some of the Mac's features, then take some time alone with the computer to explore it.
Step 6: Find the Best Deal

- While Mac buyers have fewer vendors from which to choose and fewer price range options, it's still possible to find a good deal.
- Check product updates. MacRumors offers advice on when to buy your Mac based on rumors and observed product trends.
- Consider buying a refurbished computer. You can get a deal on a computer that someone simply returned to the store after opening the box. The Apple online store certifies the refurbished computers it sells. You can buy used and refurbished computers elsewhere— just make sure the seller is trustworthy.
