Herodotus of Halicarnassus was a Greek historian, born to Lyxes and Dryo, who authored The Histories, considered the first significant piece of historical writing in the Western canon. There remains debate among historians as to how much of The Histories, an account of the 5th Century BC conflict between the Persian and Greek Empires, is influenced by myth rather than fact.

Contribution

Herodotus was the first historian to collect his materials systematically, test his accuracy and arrange events into a compelling narrative. He admitted in his writing to relying on second-hand accounts of events, reporting things told to him in addition to events he personally witnessed.
