When the veins of the anus become inflamed and swollen, it is referred to as hemorrhoids or piles. Hemorrhoids are prevalent in both males and females, and people over the age of fifty account for half of the inflicted. Blood present in the stool is the the most common symptom of hemorrhoids. Topical creams, warm baths, and medications can treat hemorrhoids. However, in extreme cases, surgery may be required.

Rectal bleeding often associated with hemorrhoids requires medical attention. A physician must verify that such bleeding is not caused by a more serious condition, such as colorectal cancer.
