Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Heart disease is also the cause of many major disabilities. There are many forms of heart disease the most common being coronary artery disease. In some cases, people are born with heart disease. Other types of heart disease can affect the valves of the heart and can cause the heart to not pump properly and lead to heart failure.

Risk Factors

Some risk factors that can lead to heart disease include smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, poor diet, physical inactivity, alcohol and obesity. In some cases heart disease can also be hereditary.

Prevention

It is important to take care of yourself and take the proper steps to prevent heart disease. Some things you can do to protect yourself include controlling your cholesterol levels, don't smoke, keep high blood pressure under control, eat a health diet and get plenty of exercise. Other things include preventing or controlling diabetes and maintaining a healthy weight.
