Guide Note

Major General Antonio Taguba was Deputy Commanding General of the Third Army when he was assigned to investigate claims of unfair treatment at Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq in January of 2004. Taguba's resulting report, which was praised by some for its honesty and dismissed by others as a gross exaggeration, was leaked to the press, exposing the human rights violations and torturous treatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib Prison. Shortly after the leak, Taguba was reassigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs in Washington DC. He retired in January of 2007 after 34 years of service.
