A food allergy is an adverse reaction to a specific type of food. They fall into two categories, sometimes called "true food allergy" and "food sensitivity", both of which can be extremely damaging to the body. Most food allergies are caused by only 8 foods. While children can outgrow food allergies, if a reaction to a food is severe, that food should be avoided.

IgE-mediated food allergies, also called a true food allergy, cause the immune system to fight the food as if it is a disease. Symptoms include hives, itching, wheezing and in severe cases anaphylaxis. They can often be detected in the blood.

Non-IgE-mediated food allergies, also called "food sensitivity", involve non-immune body systems and cannot be detected in the blood. Food sensitivities are typically diagnosed via a food challenge or food elimination test. Despite the mild name, food sensitivities can cause extreme illness. Some food sensitivities include lactose intolerance and celiac disease.
